DAY 20- Colca Canyon to Arequipa
December 2, 2011, 23:13
(5026km)

Started early this morning to see the Canyon first. The road was all the way unpaved and the suspension had to do a good job. After 60km the Mirador was reached covered by hundreds of tourists.

The Condors were not available. Only hundreds of meters above us there was one gliding through the air.

Over all the Canyon is very nice, the comparison to the Grand Canyon (Arizona) is difficult as the approach is different.

TRAVEL ADVICE: If you drive 3-5 kilometers more there is a similar view point without any tourists. The road is only paved between these two viewing points.

As I had to take the same route back it was again 2x60 km gravel road. On my way back I realized that I slightly loose pressure on the back tire. As I thought it might not be the best idea to fix that on close to 4000m altitude I moved on as the pressure loss was minor.

Unluckily my tire had a different point of view. Just as I was crossing the following national park the part which caused the pressure loss disappeared and the pressure moved from 2.4 bar to 1.3 and then to zero.

So the first tire repair of the trip was performed on 4300m. Think about using a manual air pump on that height...

...takes time. So after I had 1.6 bar in the tire I decided that is enough to get to the next filling station.

This evening I arrived in Arequipa the suburbs are not really friendly but the old town center is worth to visit. As - according to the travel guide - this is not the safest area I did not take out the camera at night. Will shoot photos tomorrow and will report.
